In many police forces around the world, the officers are armed with lethal weapons. The most notable exception to this is the United Kingdom, where (excluding Northern Ireland) only 10% of police are armed. These armed police do not operate on general duties but are assigned to specialist armed response squads.
Few civilians are killed by UK police and there are no plans at present to arm police on general duties.
Police armed with lethal weapons, however well trained and benevolent in intention, project a culture of violence.
It is the long-term aim of the NLW for Peace Campaign that all police forces around the world should copy the UK police and operate without lethal weapons.
